Research : problems of aesthetic value in Art

Source:
http://www.postgallery.co.kr/study/stud5-1.htm

My Topic:

How can we estimate Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter?

What I hope to learn from this source:
I hope to know the problems of aesthetic value and then what the standard of estimating paintings is.

Notes:

  1.  Before drawing, artists should choose what they express or what emotions and ideas they would convey. So people have to estimate them according their intention.
  2. The main problem of aesthetic value is that the estimation is subjective so that paintings should be estimated with objectivity.
  3. M.C Beardsley  said that the standard of art is components in the painting. He defined the aesthetic value that when supposing x has aesthetic value, x has an ability to produce aesthetic experience.
 Final Thoughts :
To estimate the paintings, we have to be objective. And the way to be objective is to consider intention of painters.

Week 16 Final Draft

<  How can we estimate Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter? >

Have you ever imagined that people are falling from the sky like rain? It is difficult to imagine because it is not in reality. However, René François Ghislain Magritte is famous for surrealist and the 'Golconda' which I suggested as an example is one of his masterworks. Like him, lots of painters try to convey their thought through their paintings. The difference between the general painters and surrealists is that they express their works unrealistically. In surrealism, there is a debate that the beginning person of surrealism is Hieronymus Bosch. Some argue that it is right that he is the root and the other say that he is not but just he is a holy painter. In my opinion, I think he is an altar Portraitist not a surrealist.
Someone may have heard the name 'Hieronymus Bosch'. Also, someone would have seen surrealism paintings interestingly. Therefore, before starting serious supports, I would like to give you some information about my topic: Hieronymus Bosch, Surrealism and altar portraitist. First Hieronymus Bosch is a Dutch artist who often got ordered to draw altarpieces by new Kings because he was a sincere Christian. In his paintings, he depicted heaven and hell, Adam and Eve, and other utopian organisms. Still, his paintings have variety of opinions concerning the category. Second, Surrealism is a way to draw the world of fantasies and non-reality. Painters express their immediate thoughts and imagination through paintings without reason. Lastly, altar portraitist is a painter who draws altar pieces to hang them on the wall of Church. In altar portraits, there are usually depicted contents of Bible and Jesus. The biggest different point between surrealism and altar painting is whether painter is conscious when he or she is painting.
Additionally, I want to tell you one more information. It is the standard of estimating arts, mostly paintings. According to 'Problems of aesthetic value' written by Kim Ok-nyeol which posted in Harang, an Internet art museum named  Modern Art specialty Internet, the writer pointed out the problem of evaluating paintings that people are subjective. People need to be objective since artists should choose what they express or what emotions and ideas they would convey before drawing. The article also said that objective evaluation is more important because there are lots of paintings which are formed diversely today. It means people should focus on painters when we estimate their painting.
In a case of Hieronymus Bosch wanted to deliver the facts and beliefs of Christ rather than his imagination largely called Surrealism. From now, I will explain why I think Hieronymus Bosch should be considered an altar painter.
First, we have to consider the intention of painters when we estimate paintings as  I referred. Since we can not know what thought the painter had as he had drawn, it is important to figure out the painter’s intention when we see the painting at first. In a case of  Hieronymus Bosch, his paintings mostly show how Hieronymus Bosch looked at the world and how he estimated and criticized the world as a Christian. We can confirm through one of his paintings: Garden of Earthly Delights.
According to 'Garden of Earthly Delights' from encyclopedia of Naver knowledge, On the left side of this large triptych represents Eden Park, however, as move our eyes to the middle of the works, the painting describes human world that is full of capricious love which is getting corrupted. Finally, on the right side, he drew evils on the Bible. His work indicates us some moral lessons that as time goes by, human is becoming craven and chopping their ice. Also people are living against the rules of God so that he warns the world of devils with punishments in the future if people continue to show the same behaviors. Not only 'Garden of Earthly Delights', his painting say that people should live as the rule of God. For example, Hieronymus Bosch said foolish of human and the importance of following God through his painting 'The stone operation'.  Like this, with his paintings can we know how he is a sincere Christian and he tried to convey his belief and his thoughts by expressing on his paintings. These facts help us to consider him as an altar portraitist.
Second, if we estimate paintings, we should observe subjects and stories in paintings closely. M.C Beardsley said that the standard of art is components in the paintings. Subjects have the significant role because they are similar with main characters and plots in novels. They are a kind of main means to express painters’ ideas. In case of Hieronymus Bosch, he usually conveyed contents, backgrounds and characters of Bible through his paintings. One pictures would explain you why I think: Last judgment.
According to 'Last judgment' from encyclopedia of Naver knowledge,  the Last judgment includes the contents of Bible Matthew 13 and 24-25. Matthew 13 of Bible says that as fox-tails are burned at the harvest, the wicked are thrown on the fire while the good would shine like Sun in the world of God at the end of the world. Bosch drew the situation of the end of the world according to Matthew 24-25. The painting is described the punishments. The punishments come from monstrous creatures of Hell. The damned are burned, speared, impaled, hung from butcher hooks, forced to eat impure food or subjects to cogs of bizarre machines. This scene has strong similarities with contents of Bible and reveals intention of Bosch that tried to inform the details of Bible. Therefore in terms of subjects and stories, he is an altar painter.
Third, painting skills could be a factor distinguish painters. For several years, painters have been discriminated according to their skills such as Impressionist, Cubist, Fauvist, Surrealist and the like. According to 'The unique vision and the fantasies of Bosch' from Ibiblio, Hieronymus Bosch used to use Flandre and Impasto techniques which are not related with surrealism when he drew his works. First, the reason he used Flandre, he didn't want to reveal the fact that human made. He selected Flandre style to conceal humane aspects from his paintings so that he hardly signed on the paintings. In fact, he signed only seven of his paintings, and there is uncertainty whether all the paintings once ascribed to him were actually from his hand. Second, the reason he used Impasto technique. Impasto is a way to draw uneven-surface-pictures by covering the colored pigments thick. This way also deny the fact the made by human and leave sacred impression rather than impression that painters took hard work on paintings. It is an apparent difference between altar paintings especially Hieronymus Bosch and Surrealism which uses Decalcomanie, a decorative technique by which engravings and prints may be transferred to pottery or other materials. On the other words, Hieronymus Bosch selected painting skills as a way to express his ideas on his paintings Through Flandre skill he tried to hide that humans is far from perfect and to stand out flawless of God. With considering his intention, we have to categorize him as an altar painter.
Some of the art experts can say that Hieronymus Bosch is the surrealism painter rather than an altarpiece painted one. They insist that he draw characters and would which do not exist in the reality. I agree that and it is of course things because Bosch tried to express the Bible which belongs to regions. People used to have a region to remove the fear and anxiety of their lives and they believe unreality. As a Christian, Hieronymus Bosch wanted to warn about the common misdeeds and convey the contents to the public. Actually he drew monsters, devils, some animals that have horns, Eden park, heaven, evils, Adam and Eve. All of these are contained in Bible. He just tried to express the exact fact from his region without his imagination that requires in Surrealism. I want to emphasize that although his paintings look like surrealism, it is an unavoidable process to describe his belief that are not realistic. Therefore, depending on his intention, he should be categorized to an altarpiece painter rather than a surrealism painter.
Still, the debate that how to categorize Hieronymus Bosch is on the table. This topic may seem not important however a nickname of an ancestor is determined by descendants. If we do not care about great works of ancestor, it is same not to respect them and to miss the development possibility for the future. Moreover, if Hieronymus Bosch is an surrealist, the tree of art should be changed. As I referred, René François Ghislain Magritte is known as the beginning of Surrealism. However if Bosch is, not only it would prove that the erstwhile education is wrong because textbooks and theoretical books have also mistakes but also it says that the standard of evaluating paintings is changed into being subjective.
Although some experts insist that he is a surrealism painter because his paintings involve unrealistic things, I think Hieronymus Bosch should be considered as a holy painter depending on his intentions and his drawing styles on his painting. He expressed his viewpoint of the world and described contents and characters of Bible on his paintings. In addition, he used not related techniques with Surrealism and just used skills to make pictures look sacred. What I want to emphasize through this argument is that we have to focus on intention and styles of the painters. I expect that it would affect greatly in current art world which consider interpretation of appreciators rather than thoughts of painters.

<  How can we estimante Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter? >

Categorizing the ancestral painters is a way to respect them. Also, we can learn about them generally and about their own characteristics in details.

Week 11 Self evaluation

1) What score do you think you deserve? Here is the rubric:
2 points - The first draft is thoughtful and a good start to an effective persuasive essay. It demonstrates an understanding of the classical argument.
1 point - The student completes a first draft that demonstrates an understanding of the classical argument
0 points - The first draft is inadequate
-I will give 1 point for me because it is short and the each of supporting's evidence lacks persuasion.

2) What did you do well?
-Since my argument is related with arts, I used some names of painting techniques. I think it makes readers prevent from understanding my argument so I additionally wrote the meanings by using relative pronoun. Moreover, I emphasize some points to remember.
arguments are based off of opinions and personal feelings.
3) What could you have done better?
-I wrote two first drafts. One is before the mid-term exam and the other is after the exam. I was pointed out that I arranged researches on my supporting argument. After accepting that point, I tried to write argument on my own words.

4) Which part of the classical argument did you use the best?

-It is refutation. I agreed some points of the opposite side and I refuted them by highlighting what I want to say and What point they have consider (Hieronymus Bosch is a Christ and not use the surrealism techniques.).

5) Which part of the classical argument did you use the most poorly?

-It is Narration. Although I suggested some definitions about my argument, it is not smooth. Also, when I wrote it, I didn't understand what Narration is and What I have to explain.

6) What's your strategy to make your second draft better?
-I would like to rewrite my narration briefly and to compensate my confirmation with powerful evidences.

My Topic:

How can we estimate Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter?

What I hope to learn from this source:
I hope to know distinguishing painting techniques and the intention

Notes:

  1.  He used Flandre style when he drawn. He didn't want to reveal the fact that human made. He selected Flandre style to conceal humane aspects from his paintings so that he hardly signed on the paintings. In fact, he signed only seven of his paintings, and there is uncertainty whether all the paintings once ascribed to him were actually from his hand. It is known that from the early sixteenth century onwards numerous copies and variations of his paintings began to circulate.
  2. His style was highly influential, and was widely imitated by his numerous followers. Over the years, scholars have attributed to him fewer and fewer of the works once thought to be his, and today only 25 are definitively attributed to him.
  3. Impasto skill is a way to draw uneven-surface-pictures by covering the colored pigments thick. It is for giving impression sacred.
  4. Surrealism used to use  Decalcomanie which is a decorative technique by which engravings and prints may be transferred to pottery or other materials.
 Final Thoughts :
Between Bosch's techniques and Surrealism painters' skills is there difference. Hieronymus Bosch is far away from Surrealism.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I hope to know what the painter tried to express in the painting 'Last judgement'

Notes:

  1. The painting is totally similar to Bible Matthew 13 and 24-25. It contains the fact that  as foxtails are burned at the harvest, the wicked are thrown on the fire while the good would shine like Sun in the world of God at the end of the world.
  2. It express the exact punishments written on Bible. The punishments are caused by pretending False Christ, predicting False future, disasters like war, famine, earthquakes and persecution and other disarrangement. Most Punishments comes without notice and have a big space fluctuation.
  3. After the punishments, the real would of Christ is achieved.
Final Thoughts:
I hope to find more information about his drawing style.

I hope to know expression in the painting 'Garden of Earthly Delights'

Notes:

  1. Hieronymus Bosch drew strange and imaginary beast, unrealistic landscape and misdeeds of human.
  2. The painting indicates his thought about the world. He tried to criticize the human behavior and warn punishments we would got if we continued to act a mean bastard.
  3. From the left to the right, he described from heaven called Eden park to evils which give us punishments.
Final Thoughts:
This painting involves his thoughts of the world. I want to find more works of him to demonstrate him as a holy painter.

New First Draft

Second, He usually conveyed contents, backgrounds and characters of Bible through his paintings. One pictures would explain you why I think : Last judgement.
Last judgement includes the contents of Bible Matthew 13 and 24-25. Matthew 13 of Bible says that as foxtails are burned at the harvest, the wicked are thrown on the fire while the good would shine like Sun in the world of God at the end of the world. He just tried to express the exact fact from his region without his imagination which requires in Surrealism. I want to emphasize that although his paintings look like surrealism, it is an unavoidable process to describe his belief which are not realistic. Therefore, depending on his intention, he should be categorized to an altarpiece painter rather than surrealism painter.
Still, the debate that how to categorize Hieronymus Bosch is on the table. Although some experts insists that he is a surrealism painter because his paintings involve unrealistic things, I think Hieronymus Bosch should be considered as a holy painter depending on his intentions and his drawing styles on his painting. What I want to emphasize through this argument is that we have to focus on intention and styles of the painters. I expect that it would affect greatly in current art world which consider interpretation of appreciators rather than thoughts of painters.

Week 10 Conclusion

First Conclusion

To sum up, Hieronymus Bosch is an altar painter rather than non realistic and fantasy painter.  His paintings shows his standpoints to the world and they are  related with Bible. In addition  he used drawing techniques not related with Surrealism. We have to remember that there is a difference to understand the meaning the painter intends, between surrealism and holy pictures.

Rewritten Conclusion

Still, the debate that how to categorize Hieronymus Bosch is on the table. Although some experts insists that he is a surrealism painter because his paintings involve unrealistic things, I think Hieronymus Bosch should be considered as a holy painter depending on his intentions and his drawing styles on his painting. He express his view point of the world and described contents and characters of Bible on his paintings.

Week 9 Refutation and Concession

1. What is my thesis?
Hieronymus Bosch should be categorized as an altarpiece painter..

2. What is the opposite position?

Hieronymus Bosch is the beginning painter of surrealism painter.

3. What arguments can I anticipate?

a) Hieronymus Bosch draw characters and world which do not exist in reality.
4. How will I counter those arguments?
a) I agree that he draw non reality but it is for region which is unreal.

My Refutation and Concession

Some of art experts can say that Hieronymus Bosch is surrealism painter rather than an altarpiece painter. They insist that he draw characters and would which do not exist in the reality. I agree that and it is of course things because Bosch tried to express the Bible which belongs to regions. People used to have region to remove the fear and anxiety of their lives and they believe unreality. As a Christian, Hieronymus Bosch wanted to warn about the common misdeeds and convey the contents to the public. Actually he draw monsters, devils, some animals which have horns, Eden park, heaven, evils, Adam and Eve. All of these are contained in Bible.

Week 8 confirmation

1. What is my thesis?
Hieronymus Bosch is a holy painter rather than a surrealism painter.

2. What types of source am I using to defend my thesis?
I am using the universal interpretations of Bosch's paintings.

3. Are my arguments mostly based on evidence, logic or emotion?
My arguments have no hard evidence. In fact, I think that is one of the biggest problems with my confirmation. I have the common thoughts of art experts about Bosch's  paintings. Since I also know the unique points of  him, I am going to lead my essay with logic.

My Confirmation

Hieronymus Bosch wanted to deliver the facts and beliefs of Christ rather than his own imagination largely called Surrealism
First, His paintings shows who Hieronymus Bosch looked at the world and how he estimated and criticized the world as a Christian. We can confirm through one of his paintings :Garden of Earthly Delights. On the left side of this large triptych represents Eden Park, however, as move our eyes to the middle of the works, the painting describes human world that is full of capricious love which is getting corrupted. Finally, on the right side, he drew evils on the Bible. His work indicates us some moral lessons that as time goes by, human is becoming craven and chopping their own ice. Also people are living against the rules of God so that he warns the world of devils with punishments in the future if people continue to show the same behaviors. Through this painting, we can know how he is a sincere Christian and he tried to convey his belief and his thoughts by expressing on his paintings.
Third, He used to use Flandre and Impasto techniques which are not related with surrealism when he drew his works. First, the reason why he used Flandre, he didn't want to reveal the fact that human made. He selected Flandre style to conceal humane aspects from his paintings so that he hardly signed on the paintings. In fact, he signed only seven of his paintings, and there is uncertainty whether all the paintings once ascribed to him were actually from his hand. Second, the reason why he used Impasto technique. Impasto is a way to draw uneven-surface-pictures by covering the colored pigments thick. This way also deny the fact the made by human and leave sacred impression rather than impression that painters took hard work on paintings. It is the apparent difference between altar paintings especially Hieronymus Bosch and Surrealism which uses Decalcomanie, a decorative technique by which engravings and prints may be transferred to pottery or other materials.

Research : Definition of Surrealism

Source:

My Topic:

How can we estimate Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter?

What I hope to learn from this source:
I hope to know difference between Surrealism and Hieronymus's fantasies. Before this, I need to understand the definition of Surrealism.

Notes:

  1. The word 'Surrealism' is made by poetry Apollinaire in 1917.
  2. Surrealism puts emphasis on fantasies and illusions which are not dominated reason.
  3. Its root is Dadaism. Dadaism is a movement which occurred after World War 1 to destroy the original traditional order and admire irrationality and non-ethic. It makes new techniques like collage, objet and the like.
Final Thoughts:
Surrealism and the painter's styles have similarities. I should find definite differences between them. Or any specific method to categorize Hieronymus Bosch as a holy painter.

Research : The unique vision and the fantasies of Bosch.

My Topic:

How can we estimate Hieronymus Bosch as a surrealist painter or a holy picture painter?

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to find some information about what is Hieronymus Bosch's unique visions and fantasies.

Notes:

  1.  Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Bosch's works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain.
  2.  Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogen bosch, all of which are now lost. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them.
  3.  Very little is known about Bosch, which somehow seems fitting since his work is so enigmatic. Many of his paintings are devotional, and there are several on the theme of the Passion. He is specially famous for his fantastic, demon-filled works.
  4.  His work was influenced by the Flemish school of painting. The world of Bosch is one of horror and imagination. His Vision of Tondalys both amuses and frightens us. We see a strange animal forcing a sharp stick through a large ear. A creature with a great head stretches open its mouth to show a table with people both behind and under it. A man caught in a big hat finds that one of his legs is sprouting roots. People fly through the air. In the background fire lights up the sky.
Final Thoughts:
To refute the opposite side, I need to know about surrealism accurately.

Week 7 Narration

The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.

1. What do people already know about my topic?
Everyone have ever seen the surrealism paintings

2. What research has already been done about my topic?

-http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=1116363 :  Definition of Surrealism
-http://blog.naver.com/taschenbook/70188420681 : Hieronymus Bosch.Complete Works!
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hieronymus_Bosch , http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=1102596 : History of Hieronymus Bosch

3. What are the implications of my argument (What if I'm right? What if I'm right and people ignore me?)

My argument would indicates how Hieronymus Bosch should be categorized. Since this problem have been debated for a long time and I would categorized him depending on his styles and intentions to draw, I think the standard to categorize painters would be reorganized by my argument.

My persuasive argument thesis is:  Hieronymus Bosch should be categorized as an altarpiece painter.
Someone may have heard the name 'Hieronymus Bosch'. Also, someone would have seen surrealism interestingly. Therefore, before starting serious supports, I need to give you some information about my topic : Hieronymus Bosch and Surrealism. First Hieronymus Bosch is a Dutch artist who got ordered to draw altarpieces by new Kings because he was a sincere Christian. In his paintings, he depicted heaven and hell, Adam and Eve, and other utopian organisms. Still, his paintings has variety of opinions concerning the category. Second,  Surrealism is a way to draw the world of fantasies and non-reality. Painters express their immediate thoughts and imagination through paintings without reason.

Week 6 Introduction

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.
Have you ever imagined that people are falling from the sky like rain? It is difficult to imagine because it is not in reality. However, René François Ghislain Magritte is famous for surrealist and the 'Golconde' which I suggested as an example is one of his masterworks. Like him, lots of painters try to convey their thought through their paintings  and the difference between the general painters and surrealists is that they express their works unrealistically. In surrealist, there is a debate that the beginning person of surrealism is Hieronymus Bosch. Some argue that it is right that he is the root and the other say that he is not but just he is a holy painter. I agree that he is an altar Portraitist.

Week 3 Articulation

1) My argument
I want to argue that Hieronymus Bosch is a person who draws altarpieces. So far, there are so many of debates about what the painter pursued. Some said he enjoyed to express his thoughts on his paintings as a Christian. The other said that he usually painted non-reality unlike other painters at that time. I will insist that Hieronymus Bosch is a holy painter with some reasons.

2) How I found My Argument
While reading 'Harvard Sampler', I could know about the painter "Hieronymus Bosch". I could feel his freedom of expressions and freewheeling. During researches about him, I could see his paintings and his inner world. Mostly, I found what he wanted to express on his painting. I knew that he was a Christian and he tried to express his beliefs and points of what he thought about posthumous. However, I also could see that some people think that he is a surrealist painter although he was a painter who gave his paintings to King. The source made me emphasize Bosch's thoughts as a painter to them.

3) New research questions
 - What is the definition of Surrealism?
 - What is the first painting of Hieronymus Bosch?
 - Are there common things in paintings of Hieronymus Bosch?
 - What is the most difference between Hieronymus Bosch and other painters?

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler
Chapter 2 in Harvard Sampler talks about the liberty in the cyberspace. To express the liberty of cyberspace, the writer incited a feature of Hieronymus Bosch. I think through well knowing about the painter we can understand the freedom and it could be a chance to expand our ideas of arts.
